Takes an 8-week-old puppy for approximately 6-8 months. (See below why this is so important!*) Puppy raisers are responsible for providing the puppy’s basic needs, routine veterinary care, socialization, obedience training, and completing quarterly evaluations. New Horizons offers the first three puppy shots free of charge if you bring the puppy to our facility. After approximately 6-8 months, the dog will return to New Horizons to enter the Prison Pup Program.

Takes a dog coming out of the Prison Pup Program for approximately 6-8 months. Responsible for the dog’s basic needs, routine veterinary care, socialization, and quarterly evaluations.
*It is so important that our puppies and dogs get home exposure for a few months before entering the Prison Pup Program, and upon coming out of the Prison Pup Program after a few months. Service Dogs in Training need day to day, real life experiences such as riding in vehicles, going to a restaurant or grocery store, and walking through a crowded public place. They need to live in a home environment so they will be comfortable hearing a noisy dishwasher or vacuum cleaner, seeing their reflection in the stove, hearing a doorbell or knock at the door, and not begging for food at the dinner table. They need exposure to cats!
Rotating the Service Dogs in Training on a 6-8 month rotation time frame allows the dogs to keep up with training, socialize in a variety of public settings, and learn to work with different people. It helps puppy raisers and inmate trainers to not become too attached to one dog. Our goal is for volunteers to continue the ongoing volunteering by taking a new puppy or prison dog (your choice) every 6-8 months.

We carefully select female puppies to keep in our breeding program. These puppies go into family homes where they are raised and reside their entire life. These special puppies will become breeder dogs for New Horizons once they pass their hip, elbow, heart and eye examinations. They will whelp their puppies at New Horizons and stay at our facility approximately 6-8 weeks. After their puppies are weaned they will return to their family. After providing four litters of puppies the dog is spayed and becomes your forever pet.
